People Monday blocked the Gurgaon-Rewari state highway for over five hours while alleging police inaction against cow smugglers.

The residents of several villages Monday afternoon blocked the state highway near Hyatpur village, eight km from the Gurgaon bus stand. It resulted in a huge traffic jam.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Yogendra Yadav criticised the police for inaction against cattle smugglers.

In his statement, Yadav said police remained inactive despite the people informing them about smuggling of the animals.

As per eyewitnesses, some people saw a mini-truck full of cows and chased it on a bike.

However, the riders were injured after the bike hit the mini-truck.

"Police were called and they chased the mini-truck. However, when people in the police vehicle asked the driver to speed up, they were told this was the maximum speed that could be reached and hence, the mini-truck managed to escape," a volunteer, fighting for prevention of smuggling and slaughter of cows, said.

However, DCP Sangita Rani and sub-divisional magistrate Om Prakash have assured strict action against the cattle smugglers and said patrolling will be increased in the area.

A youth Vikrant Yadav from Jamalpur village was killed by smugglers when he was chasing one of their vehicles Aug 25, 2013.
