The man who killed one person and injured six in a supermarket in German city of Hamburg on Friday was a known Islamist, police said on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Andy Grote said the man was known as an Islamist but not a jihadist, Xinhua news agency reported.

He said the 26-year-old suffered from mental illness.

The UAE-born stabbed a German man to death with a kitchen knife and injured other six in an indiscriminate and sudden attack.
