Hamburg has signed Mainz striker Nicolai Mueller until June 2018, the club confirmed in an official statement here Wednesday.

After three years at Mainz Nicolai Mueller has moved to Bundesliga rivals Hamburg by inking a four-year deal, reports Xinhua.

"Nicolai is a player who has steadily improved in the last years, and is always able to reach a higher level. He fits to the HSV since we also aim to improve step by step. His versatility, speed and nose for the goal will strengthen our squad," Hamburg' s sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer told the club's official website.

The new arrival started his professional career in 2006 at Greuther Fuerth before he joined Mainz in 2011 to score 21 goals in 81 appearances. Besides that Mueller was called up twice for the "Nationalmannschaft" where he already made two caps in 2013.

"I wanted to take the next step of my career, joining a big club with such a city. I have had very good talks with those responsible. I am now 26 years old and I want to develop further," the striker said.

His new club was nearly relegated into the second division last season. However, they avoided their first ever relegation in the clubs history thanks to an away goal by Pierre Michel Lasogga.
