Team Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton outpaced teammate Nico Rosberg by just 0.193 seconds to top the second practice at the Italian Grand Prix here on Friday.
Team Ferrari were Mercedes' closest rivals, with Sebastian Vettel beating teammate Kimi Raikkonen to third place by two-tenths of a second.
Team Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo moved into contention with fifth and sixth fastest times, respectively.
After some early technical issues, Fernando Alonso was the seventh fastest time for Team McLaren-Honda. Team-mate Jenson Button was 10th.
Valtteri Bottas took the eighth spot for team Williams ahead of Romain Grosjean for team Haas.
