German football club Hanover has released head coach Thomas Schaaf from his duties, after the Bundesliga side suffered its fifth defeat in a row and the 21st loss of the season, against Hamburg.

"After the tenth defeat in the last eleven games we came to the conclusion that we do not want to end the season like this. Therefore we made a change on the coach position to give the team a new impetus, knowing that staying up is only theoretically possible with a ten-point deficit," Xinhua quoted Hanover manager Martin Bader as saying in a statement on Sunday.

Hanover former Under-19 head coach Daniel Stendel will take the helm for the last six games of the season.

Hanover sit in the last place of the Bundesliga standings. They have a ten-point deficit to safety with six games to spare. The "Reds" clash with Hertha Berlin at the opener of the 29th round on April 8.
