Congress leader Harish Rawat, who was restored as Uttarakhand chief minister by the state high court on Thursday, has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court after the central government said it would appeal the verdict in the apex court, said informed sources.

Hours after the Uttarakhand High Court struck down central rule in the hill state and restored Rawat as chief minister, senior Congress leaders held discussions with legal brains and decided to approach the apex court with a caveat so that it is heard before any verdict or ruling is given in the petition to be filed by the Narendra Modi government on Friday, the sources said.

Congress leaders said that the state leadership was "in clear" that the Modi government, after this blow, would be engaged in a "proactive legal battle" to ensure that the floor test on April 29, as ordered by the high court, is not held as they fear that there might be a favourable decision for Rawat.
