To promote higher education among girls in smaller towns and rural areas, the Haryana government will start 31 new colleges from the academic session starting July, state Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said here on Wednesday.

"The Haryana government has decided to start 31 government colleges for girls with effect from ensuing academic session 2018-19 and additional charges of these colleges have been given to principals of others colleges so that work would not halt in these colleges," he said.

Sharma said the state government has been making concerted efforts to promote education for girls.

"Till the construction of college buildings get completed, these colleges would run in vacant buildings of government schools or other organisations so that girls would not have to travel to far-off places for education," he said.

These colleges would come up in Sonipat, Faridabad's Ballabgarh, Kurukshetra, Charkhi Dadri, Hisar, Gurugram, Karnal, Bhiwani, Mahendragarh, Sirsa, Mahendragarh, Kaithal, Sirsa, Karnal, Ambala, Palwal, Yamunanagar, Panchkula, Bhiwani, Jhajjar, and Rewari.
