The Haryana government wants people to celebrate their special occasions like birthdays, wedding and marriage anniversaries, by planting saplings, an official here said.
Haryana's Additional Chief Secretary (Forests) Ramender Jakhu has appealed to people to make their special occasions "memorable" by planting saplings, a state government spokesperson said Sunday.
"For the safe future of people, animals and birds, it is essential to increase the area under forest. The decrease in number of plants not only results in different kind of diseases but also leads to depleting water table," Jakhu was quoted as saying by the spokesperson.
He said the state forest department has undertaken an initiative to plant about 30 million saplings during this monsoon season.
