The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the city police to file an affidavit on steps taken to recruit an additional 14,000 personnel.

A division bench of justices B.D. Ahmed and I.S. Mehta asked Delhi Police to file its response by Dec 24, the next date of hearing.

The court's direction came on the suo motu cognisance of the Dec 16, 2012, gangrape where it has been issuing a slew of directions, including safety of women.

The court April 16 asked the central government, the city government and the police to take steps to create and fill up 14,869 additional posts in police, saying that the great shortage of security personnel has been felt by the citizens.

According to data submitted by Delhi Police in the court, 1,704 cases of rape were registered here in the first 10 months of 2014.
