Heads of leading Japanese car makers -- Toyota President Akio Toyota and Suzuki Chairman O. Suzuki -- on Thursday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said an official.

During the meeting, the two business leaders informed and discussed the Toyota-Suzuki business partnership and future technological developments with the Prime Minister, said a release from the Prime Minister's Office.

"The partnership is expected to bring together Toyota's global leadership in technology and manufacturing, with Suzuki's strength in manufacture of small cars, especially in India," it said.

The partnership is "expected to enable India to use new technological developments" and the high volumes will facilitate local manufacturing of the components.

It is also expected to generate employment and will contribute to the "Make in India" initiative of the government, it said.

"It also opens up scope for export of new-technology cars from India," the release added.
