Furqan Qamar, vice chancellor of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, has sought the consent of President Pranab Mukherjee to relieve him from his post, university officials said Sunday.

Qamar has been appointed secretary general of the Association of Indian Universities.

He has already sent a formal request to Mukherjee through the human resource development ministry to relieve him for the current assignment, a university official told IANS.

Qamar's tenure as vice chancellor will end in January next year.

He assumed charge in January 2010 as the first vice chancellor of the university, located in a temporary campus at Shahpur in Kangra district, 250 km from the state capital.

Qamar told IANS he has informed the president about his new assignment.

The Delhi-based Association of Indian Universities acts as the representative body of Indian universities.
