Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Thursday launched a programme aimed at expediting developmental works and government schemes through effective implementation in Shimla district.

'Pehal' or initiative will also help in identifying the gaps and ensure quality education in government primary schools through the joint efforts of teachers, parents, elected representatives and other stakeholders, an official statement said.

"More than 100 primary schools in Shimla district have been included in the programme under which students' learning levels can be assessed to help identify the gaps," the chief minister said.

The programme, the brainchild of Deputy Commissioner Rohan Thakur, will also focus on educating the people on forest rights, health, personal hygiene and sanitation, drug addiction, women empowerment and generating employment avenues.

In the education sector, the aim is to make studies simple and interesting and also improve the intellectual level and understanding of the students, Thakur told IANS.

He said forest officials will also be sensitised on the Forest Rights Act to help facilitate approvals for developmental works like construction of roads and other public facilities.
