A historic church here was destroyed by a massive fire on Sunday evening, causing minor injuries to four firefighters and one civilian.

A massive fire was reported around 7.00 p.m. (local time) at the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava in downtown Manhattan, according to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).

The fire completely destroyed the roof of the Gothic Revival style building, reducing all interior decoration and artwork into ashes, Xinhua news agency quoted eyewitnesses as saying.

Nobody was inside the building at the time the fire started, said a FDNY spokesman.

The cathedral was built in the early 1850s and deemed a New York City landmark in 1968.

More than 700 parishioners attended the Sunday mass inside the church in the morning to celebrate Orthodox Easter.

The cause of the fire was not clear yet.
