An institute of hotel management will be set up in Kerala's Kottayam district after union tourism ministry gave its approval.

The announcement was made by Minister of State for Tourism (Independent Charge) K. Chiranjeevi Saturday, through a message read out by a ministry official on his behalf, at a three-day programme organised by the Kerala tourism department.

The programme on "responsible tourism" was held at the tourist resort town of Kumarakom, about 160 km from the Kerala capital Thiruvananthpuram.

A proposal in this regard was sent to the ministry by Kottayam MP Jose K. Mani after which a grant of Rs.12 crore was approved for setting up the institute, which is expected to meet the human resource requirements of the state's tourism industry.
