Searing heat Wednesday continued to add to the discomfort of Delhiites with the mercury shooting five notches above average at 44.9 degrees Celsius as the city experienced its hottest morning, Met department said.

Thursday is likely to be hotter, said an official of India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The minimum temperature Wednesday morning settled four notches above average at 30.3 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest this season.

"The unrelenting heat was unbearable... it seemed that my skin would burn," said Prateek Gosain, a resident of Shalimar Bagh in north Delhi.

The humidity wavered between a high and low of 40 and 18 percent, the official said.

Such hot conditions "will continue in Delhi and the temperature is likely to increase further", said the official.

With the maximum temperature settling five notches above average at 45.1 degrees Celsius, Delhi recorded the season's hottest day Tuesday.
