Iceland striker and former Chelsea star Eidur Gudjohnsen has offered to play for crisis-hit Brazilian football club Chapecoense after a horrific plane clash wiped out nearly the entire team.

The 38-year-old tweeted on Monday that he is offering his services as a sympathetic gesture to the hardship faced by the club.

"(Out) of respect I would play for @ChapecoenseReal if they have a place for me! If not just to play with @10Ronaldinho again #ForcaChape," his tweet read.

Nineteen Chapecoense players were among the 71 people who died last week after a chartered plane ran out of fuel and crashed outside Medellin, Colombia. The team was going to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana tournament, South America's second tier competition.

The 38-year-old former FC Barcelona marksman was humble in offering his services, and said he would be keen to reunite with ex-teammate Ronaldinho who has also pledged to help the stricken Brazilian side.

Gudjohnsen would be free to play for Chapecoense, having been released by Norwegian club Molde.

Former Argentina midfielder Roman Riquelme has also wished to play for the club.
