It was an imperative need of Indian democracy to ensure that people vote, Chief Election Commissioner H.S. Brahma said on Wednesday.
"Our voters should come out in large numbers to ensure majority representation," Brahma said at a seminar on electoral reforms here.
"Democracy has different implications for different countries, but ultimately it is the government which decides the fate of a country," he said.
Enumerating on the steps taken by the Election Commission to ensure large voter turnout, the CEC said the commission has taken basic steps like ensuring drinking water facilities for voters and providing amenities for disabled voters.
"These things were not available 5-6 years back," he said.
BJP leader Vijay Jolly, who is the chief of the Delhi Study Group which organised the seminar, congratulated the CEC for recommending granting of voting rights to non-resident Indians.
