India Monday voiced concern over the recent developments in the Maldives, including the "arrest and manhandling" of former president Mohammed Nasheed.

Nasheed was arrested Sunday and charged under an anti-terrorism law.

India also urged all concerned to resolve their differences "within the constitutional and legal framework of Maldives".

External affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted: "We urge all concerned to calm the situation and resolve their differences within the constitutional and legal framework of Maldives."

"India reiterates its commitment to supporting people & Government of Maldives in their quest for peace, development, prosperity & democracy."

Police in the Maldives dragged Nasheed into a court Monday, which ordered his detention throughout his trial over a decision to arrest a senior judge three years ago.

He was dragged into the courtroom after he resisted police attempts to stop him from speaking to journalists gathered outside.
