Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid rich tributes to retired Lt Gen J.F.R. Jacob, who played a key role in the 1971 war, saying "India will always remain grateful to him".

"India will always remain grateful to him for his impeccable service to the nation at the most crucial moments," Modi tweeted, after Jacob, 93, died at a hospital here.

"Lt Gen Jacob and I interacted often. Had a memorable interaction when he presented his autobiography to me," Modi added.
