Indian army commemorates 1965 war victory

The Indian army's Udhampur headquartered Northern Command on Saturday commemorated the victory in the 1965 India-Pakistan war.

"Northern Command headquarter today (Saturday) held an impressive function to commemorate the remarkable victory of Indian Army in 1965 Indo-Pak War," Colonel S.D. Goswami, spokesman of Northern Command told IANS in winter capital Jammu.

"A function held at Udhampur headquarter was attended by senior serving officers, veterans, veer naris, families and children in which tributes were paid to the valour of Indian soldier," Goswami said.

The event was presided over by Lieutenant General N.P.S. Hira, Chief of Staff Headquarters Northern Command.

He flagged off two adventure activities which include an expedition covering approximately 300 kms (Nagrota-Akhnoor- Rakhmuthi) by a team of the Para motors and 'The Victory Car Rally'.

 

'The Victory Car Rally' comprises a team of ex-servicemen and serving officers who will traverse 1700 kms over rugged terrain in J&K (Udhampur-Srinagar-Uri-Poonch-Akhnoor-Nagrota-in J&K-Ambala-New Delhi) before being flagged in at Raj Path, New Delhi on September 18, 2015.

The ceremony included an enthralling display by Para motorists and a "Combat Free Fall" by the Army's Special Forces team, flown in from Agra for the event.

"During the interaction with veterans and veer naris, the Chief of Staff applauded the contribution of the veterans in 1965 wherein the Indian Military won a resounding victory over the Pakistan Army."

"The adventure activities are being conducted to pay homage to the heroes of the nation, who had made the supreme sacrifice in the war of 1965," Goswami told IANS.

Earlier in the day, at a solemn function to honour the sacrifices made by the braves of the Indian Army, rich tributes were paid by serving officers and veterans at the Dhruva War Memorial, Udhampur.
