An Indian man in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been convicted of attempting suicide by taking sleeping pills after he could not sleep because of anxiety, media reported Tuesday.

The worker, identified only as R.B., who is in his 20s, was rushed to hospital after suffering from an urgent medical situation Sep 11 after consuming Panadol night pills, the Gulf News reported.

R.B. admitted that he took the pills as he could not sleep but denied the charge at the Dubai Misdemeanours Court Monday that he tried to kill himself.

Records said the defendant's roommate called an ambulance when he returned and found him in a serious state.

When paramedics and doctors discovered that R.B. had taken sleeping pills, they informed the police.

The man was taken into custody shortly after he was medicated and discharged from hospital.

The court fined the defendant 2,000 dirhams (about $500).

The court's ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
