Indian men's paddlers win, women lose

Indian men's paddlers won their quarterfinal match at the Commonwealth Games here Saturday, while the women's team lost their semifinal.

Indian men defeated Scotland 3-0 and will now take on England in the semifinal Sunday. Meanwhile Indian women, silver medallists four years ago at home, lost their semifinal to Singapore 1-3 and will face Australia for the team bronze Sunday.

Soumyjit Ghosh took off well as he beat local boy Gavin Rumgay 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-6). Veteran A. Sharath Kamal won the second singles 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-8) against Craig Howieson to give India an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Then Harmeet Desai and Ghosh drubbed Sean Doherty and Howieson 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-8) to give India, bronze medallists in 2010 Delhi, a 3-0 win.

 

Earlier, the Indian women's team failed to qualify for the summit clash losing to defending champions Singapore at the Scotstoun Sports Campus.

In the first singles, Tianwei Feng defeated Shamini Kumaresan 3-0 (11-1, 13-11, 11-5) but Manika Batra drubbed Mengyu Yu 3-2 (11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7) to level the tie at 1-all.

However, Ye Lin and Mengyu won the doubles clash defeating Madhurika Patkar and Shamini 3-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-5) to take a 2-1 lead, which they extended in the next match when Ye beat Manika 3-1 (11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5) to win the tie 3-1.

Earlier, India had beaten New Zealand 3-0 in the quarterfinals.
