Indo-Russian joint exercise Avia Indra I, underway at Air Force Station Halwara in Punjab, entered its action phase Monday, an official statement said.

A formal inauguration ceremony was held at the Air Force Station to mark the occasion.

The Russian Federation Air Force (RFAF) contingent that arrived here Nov 17, underwent a week-long orientation and adaptation phase - familiarising themselves with the operational environment and procedures.

They will now jointly exercise with the IAF crew. The statement said a hand-carved stone was unveiled and saplings were planted next to it to symbolize the growth of this unique partnership, etched in stone for posterity.

A traditional flypast by helicopters and fighters marked the occasion. The visiting aircrew will also have an opportunity to fly over the Himalayas over the next few days. The exercise will culminate Nov 27.
