One inmate at the Sada sub-jail died and several others were injured, after a failed jail break attempt late on Tuesday, police said on Wednesday.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Lawrence D'Souza said that history-sheeter Vinayak Korbatkar died due to severe stab injuries which he received in the melee during the jail break attempt.
"He was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital," the officer said.
Korbatkar incidentally was involved in the stabbing of another history-sheeter Ashpak Bengre, earlier in 2017.
Late on Tuesday night, 45 prisoners and undertrials attempted to escape from the under-repair sub-jail, after assaulting jail guards.
The prison staff also received minor injuries. Around nine inmates and four guards were treated at a local government-run facility, following Tuesday's fracas.
