The naval offshore patrol vessel INS Sumitra will be commissioned here Sep 4, according to a government statement.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral R.K. Dhowan, will commission the vessel built in Goa Shipyard, the statement said

INS Sumitra has a displacement of about 2,200 tonnes.

The ship is manned by a crew comprising eight officers and 105 sailors with Commander Milind Mokashi as her first commanding officer.

The induction of INS Sumitra in the Eastern Naval Command and her basing at Chennai will enhance the offshore surveillance and maritime patrolling capability on India's eastern seaboard in addition to giving a fillip to anti-piracy operations of the Indian Navy, the statement added.
