An annual international science and technology forum opened in Japan's Kyoto city on Sunday.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe opened the forum with the participation of 1,000 people from around 100 countries and territories, national public broadcaster NHK reported.
Abe said he wants Japan to become a country where numerous technological innovations can take place, such as self-driving cars now being developed by its auto makers.
He said he expects to see more women in the fields of science and technology in the future.
During the three-day forum, participants will hold discussions in groups on various themes such as energy, environment, and life sciences.
