Ishwar Tyagi, father of Indian Police Service (IPS) official Sanjiv Tyagi, was found dead with a gunshot wound at his Ghaziabad residence on Thursday, the police said.

While the exact cause of the death would only be clear after a post-mortem examination, a police official told IANS that the 65-year-old had a gunshot wound in his head.

"We are exploring all angles and would try and explore if it was a suicide or a case of murder," the official further stated.

Tyagi lived in the posh Rajnagar locality of Ghaziabad town.

Investigating officials in Ghaziabad, however, said that there was a history of mental ailment of the deceased's younger son and that there are reports of spats between the father and son from time to time.

The weapon used in the incident has not yet been recovered and the mentally ill son is also missing. His whereabouts are not known as his mobile phone is switched off.

The elder son Sanjiv Tyagi, posted in Lucknow, is in Ghaziabad to be with his family.
