A candidate in the fray for Iraq's May 12 parliamentary elections was stabbed to death near Mosul city, a police official said on Monday.

The incident took place on Sunday night after unidentified armed men pretending to be campaign supporters, visited Farouq Zarzour al-Jubouri's house in al-Lazzaga, the official told Xinhua news agency.

The men killed him before escaping, the official added.

Al-Jubouri was also a teacher at Tikrit University in Salahudin province.

On May 12, some 7,000 candidates will compete for the 329 seats in the Iraqi parliament.

This will be the first general election since the Islamic State terror group was defeated last December.
