Beirut, Oct 15 (IANS/EFE) The Islamic State (IS) terrorist group Wednesday fought to gain control over the eastern part of the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobane, on the border with Turkey, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said.
Fierce clashes were reported in the area between the jihadis and Protection Units of the Kurdish people.
Meanwhile, aircraft of the US-led international coalition flew over the city Wednesday, without intervening.
Kobane is one of the three main Kurdish enclaves in Syria and has been the target of IS attacks since mid-September.
According to the SOHR, the IS controls almost half the city, although Kurdish authorities put that figure at less than 30 percent.
US President Barack Obama Tuesday said he was "deeply concerned" about the IS threat against Kobane.
