Spontaneous protests broke out on Thursday in parts of Srinagar and other places in the Kashmir valley against the killing of civilians in Shopian gunbattles on Sunday.

Students of the Kashmir University and the Central University of Kashmir held protests within the campuses of the two universities and offered funeral prayers in absentia for those killed.

Students of the Government College for Women here also came out in protest, disrupting traffic and businesses in nearby areas.

Students of the Amar Singh College also protested while police used force when they were pelted with stones by the demonstrators.

Similar protests were held in the Islamia College of Science and Commerce in the old city area.

Protests also reportedly broke out in north Kashmir's Handwara town where three students received minor injuries during clashes with security forces.

Schools and colleges were opened at most places in the Valley on Thursday after four days of shutdown.
