The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Tuesday added a 4.37-km elevated corridor to its already operational Yellow Line from HUDA City Centre to Jahangirpuri.
Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal formally flagged off passenger services on the extended section, an official said.
The Yellow Line, also known as Line 2, of the Delhi Metro now extends from HUDA City Centre till Samaypur Badli with a length of 49 km and three more stations.
With this extension, an estimated 29,000 more commuters would be added to the busy sections of the DMRC.
Naidu complimented the DMRC for finishing the project on time and said other organisations should also follow example of the DMRC.
The minister also appreciated the DMRC for taking various environment-friendly measures such as the installation of roof top solar power panels at the stations as well as the provision for rain water harvesting.
Speaking on the occasion, Kejriwal said that DMRC has shown that government agencies can also work efficiently and complete their projects within schedule.
He congratulated the Delhi Metro officials for presenting the people with a clean and efficient transport system.
With the opening of this section, Delhi Metro's total network length has increased to 213 km with 160 stations.
The flagging off ceremony among others was attended by BJP MP Udit Raj, Delhi legislators Vijender Gupta and Ajesh Yadav and other Delhi government officials.
