A four-day theatre festival involving participation of jailbirds and tribals will be staged in the city beginning May 1 to mark the 66th anniversary of legendary playwright Sambhu Mitra-founded theatre group "Bahurupee".
Seven plays will be staged during the festival to be organised at the city's Academy of Fine Arts including a play by the "Baharampore Repertory Theatre" - a group of 24 convicts from the Baharampore Central Correctional Home, Bahurupee officials said Monday.
Directed by Pradip Bhattacharya of the group, the play is based on Rabindranath Tagore's "Yakshapuri".
Abong Amra, a group comprising tribals from Burdwan district, would be enacting "Oedipus" by legendary Greek dramatist Sophocles.
A pictorial exhibition showcasing various moments of Mitra's life will also be held on the occasion.
