Major traffic restrictions have been imposed across Jammu city ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's day-long visit to Jammu and Kashmir's winter capital on Friday.

Security has also been stepped up to prevent any infiltration across the international border and the Line of Control (LoC) when Modi attends the centenary celebrations of late Congress leader Girdhari Lal Dogra.

Dogra was the father-in-law of union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

An official said traffic diversions have been put in place on almost all the main roads in Jammu city and those linking other districts of the Jammu region with the winter capital.

These restrictions would be lifted after the prime minister leaves for New Delhi in the afternoon, said the official.

"All roads leading to Jammu University (where the main function is scheduled to be held) have been sealed right from today (Thursday)."

The function venue has been taken over by the Special Protection Group looking after the security of the prime minister, the official added.

An intelligence official said: "In order to prevent any infiltration from across the international border and the LoC special attention is being given to areas where the border fencing has been damaged by flash floods recently."

A police officer told IANS: "A security drill was held today from the technical area of Jammu airport to General Zorawar Singh auditorium in Jammu University."
