A 27-year-old man threw acid on a 22-year-old woman in Odisha early Friday after she refused to marry him, police said.
The victim who suffered over 40 percent burn injuries was first admitted to a local hospital. After her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the Sriram Chandra Bhanja (SCB) Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, 26 km from here.
The woman's family said the incident occurred when she was sleeping in her home at Badanaukana village of coastal Kendrapada district.
Alekha Mandal, the culprit, threw acid through the window and managed to escape.
Mandal is a resident of Rangani village and allegedly wanted the woman to marry him. He had also issued death threats after his offer was spurned by the woman and her parents.
Police have formed a team and launched a manhunt to nab Mandal, inspector in charge of Rajnagar police station Biranchi Bag said.
