Jordan confirmed Thursday a new case of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus infection, media reported.

The country's health ministry said a non-Jordanian man in his 70s tested positive for the deadly virus, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

The number of MERS infection cases thus rises to 12 in Jordan since 2012 and six of them died.

The MERS outbreak has caused panic throughout the region, prompting many governments to launch awareness campaigns and precautionary measures in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus.

Hundreds of infections have been reported in the region, especially in Saudi Arabia.
