The 17-year-old driver of an e-rickshaw was apprehended in the capital after his vehicle hit a woman and knocked her child into a vessel of boiling sugar syrup leading to his death, police said Thursday.

The accused was held from east Delhi Thursday afternoon.

Police said the accused was earlier held in a case of rape of a six-year-old girl in Kalyanpuri area of east Delhi but was currently at liberty.

Three-year-old Dev was in his mother Pinky's arms when she was hit by the e-rickshaw outside a sweet shop in east Delhi's Trilokpuri area Tuesday evening.

Pinky also suffered burns on her hand while trying to pull the child out of the vessel. Both were rushed to a hospital, where Dev died of his injuries.

Police said Dev and his mother were on their way to buy milk from the market when the e-rickshaw hit her. The driver is known to take drugs.
