An intense cold wave Sunday gripped Jammu and Kashmir, with night temperatures touching minus 15 degrees in Leh as well as Kargil.

The weather department told IANS that the cold wave was likely to continue till Wednesday after which rain and snowfall were expected.

The minimum temperature in Leh town was minus 15 degrees Celsius and minus 15.6 degrees in Kargil town.

Srinagar's temperature fell to minus 3.7 degrees Celsius. It was minus 6.4 in Pahalgam and minus 5.6 in Gulmarg -- all in the valley.

Jammu recorded 5.7 degrees as the minimum temperature.

Rain and snowfall occur during winter months in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh because of western disturbances.

Western disturbances is the term used to describe an extra tropical storm in the Mediterranean Sea.
