US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov kicked off the talks on Syria at the United Nation's headquarters here on Friday, authorities said.
The discussion follows recent conversations on Syria and will focus on reducing violence, expanding humanitarian assistance for the Syrian people, and moving towards a political solution needed to end the civil war," Xinhua news agency cited US State Department spokesperson John Kirby as saying from a statement.
An agreement between both countries is hoped to give impetus to the intra-Syrian peace talks which have been on hold since April.
Syria's Aleppo province has been the scene of intense fighting between the Syrian Army and rebel forces since 2012.
