Kolkata gears for World Environment Day

Themed 'Think, Eat, Save', the city is set to host a variety of events encompassing art and science to mark World Environment Day June 5.

Film shows, concerts, sapling distributions, green meals and discussions on green buildings will start off a week long celebration to create awareness for introducing green practices in households as well as the tourism sector.

Augmenting eco-friendly construction efforts, the American Centre will hold a session on green buildings with US urban planning expert Robert Brosnan shedding light on best practices in the sector.

In order to tap the potential of youth to spread the message, Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM) will see students participate in a sit and draw competition June 5, with the focus on 'You and Your Environment' and 'Think Eat Save : Do not Waste Food'.

 

"More than 300 students from around 60 schools of the city will participate in activities like quiz competitions and sapling distribution," Gautam Seal of BITM told IANS.

Channeling artists to disseminate the importance of conservation, a 'Green Earth' concert June 8 will bring together renowned actor Soumitra Chatterjee and famous singers of Bengal to recreate Rabindranath Tagore's tree planting ceremonies (brikkharopan) with narrations and recitations in Bengali and English.

To carry out environment friendly practices in the hotel industry, The Park Hotel will mobilise its employees and guests to gift saplings, join hands in cleanliness drives and poster designing competitions as part of its 'Green Week' campaign, rounded off with a special green menu.

Run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Environment Day is observed June 5 every year to encourage people to take positive environmental action.

The global host for 2013 is Mongolia with the theme 'Think Eat Save :Reduce Your Foodprint'.
