The Konkan Railway Corporation on Wednesday ruled out a Bullet train running between Goa and Mumbai, citing poor traffic on the sector.

"Everything has a cost. For a Bullet train (to operate), there has to be that much traffic. To match up with the traffic between Mumbai-Ahmedabad (route), Goa would have to have ten times the (current) population... maybe even more," said Konkan Railway Corporation Limited Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Gupta.

"The entire population of Goa is equal to that of a locality in Mumbai. This is including the tourists who come to Goa," he said.

Gupta also said that over the years, high speed train technology had become cheaper and the presence of Japan, China, France and Spain peddling the technology had made the market competitive.

"Fast train service will be much cheaper than it is in Japan," he said.
