The Dalai Lama Wednesday said the root cause of corruption in India was mainly because of lack of firm conviction about value of ethics and especially with corrupted people who only talk about material values and not moral ones.

"We are lacking not only in India but across the whole world. Corruption is something like cancer which is everywhere, and there is serious corruption even in China. Therefore, we must educate people from kindergarten to university level about moral ethics. Then, there is possibility of a more clean society," the Tibetan spiritual leader told journalists here.

The Dalai Lama had touched upon corruption earlier also during his ongoing visit to the north-east.

While addressing the sixth convocation ceremony of the Martin Christian Luther University at the Soso Tham auditorium here, the Tibetan spiritual leader Monday said: "This country (India) is considered a religious country, but a lot of corruption is taking place. There are many corrupt people, and I think, the corrupt people are also highly educated."

"They (some educated people) pray to God but the purpose of their prayer is to make their corrupt life more successful," he added.
