Leopard mauls four, killed in Bengal

An adult female leopard was beaten to death in West Bengal's Siliguri on Saturday after it strayed into a tea estate and injured four people, forests officials said.

According to forest officials, the leopard strayed into Belgachia tea estate near the Panighata range of Kurseong forest division and was killed after it injured four villagers.

Additional Divisional Forest Officer (Kurseong) Angela Bhutia said a post mortem has been conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death although it appeared that the leopard was beaten to death.

A police complaint has been filed in this regard, she said.

According to forest department sources, the animal first injured John Minj a tea garden worker. Following pandemonium by the workers of the estate, the leopard, in its bid to escape, entered a nearby house where it attacked three more people - identified as Shravan Rai, Bijay Rai and Manikumar Rai.
