A new leaked letter appears to show South African authorities trying to obtain a secondary route for the transfer of $10 million to FIFA for the World Cup that was held in 2010, say reports.

The letter carried by the media in South Africa was supposedly written by South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan 21 days before the first amount was paid, bbc.com reported on Friday.

US prosecutors believe the amount was a bribe to FIFA officials to help secure the country's 2010 World Cup bid.

South Africa says it was a legitimate payment to fund Caribbean football. The $10m payment is a key plank in the wide-ranging US criminal inquiry that has engulfed world football's governing body.

Seven of the top FIFA officials which included two vice-presidents were arrested last week in Switzerland as they awaited FIFA's Congress.
