Delhi's Lt Governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday promised "strict immediate action" over the violence in Delhi University where ABVP members were accused of attacking students and teachers.

Baijal tweeted that he assured Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal "that strict immediate action will be taken against those violating law".

Baijal's assurance came after Kejriwal demanded the arrest of "those who caused violence in DU, shouted anti-India slogans and who threatened (student) Gurmehar (Kaur)".

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad forced the Ramjas College in the campus to cancel a seminar on February 21 and was blamed for the attacks on students, lecturers and journalists in the campus the next day.

Later, when student Gurmehar Kaur of Lady Shri Ram College launched a social media campaign against the RSS-affiliated ABVP, she received death and rape threats.

After meeting Baijal, Kejriwal said people who threatened Kaur should be arrested so that a message goes that such activities cannot be tolerated.

Kejriwal said Baijal assured him that "strict action will be taken against people who indulged in violence and the people who threatened Gurmehar".

Kejriwal blamed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters for the violence and anti-India sloganeering in Delhi University.

"They (BJP) send their people to shout anti-India slogans and then their supporters come and beat up others after accusing them of shouting the slogans," the Aam Aadmi Party leader alleged.

He said those who raised anti-India slogans at the Jawaharlal Nehru University last year were yet to be arrested because "they were their (BJP's) own people".

"The country will not tolerate BJP's dirty politics. Today the youths and students are up against the BJP. And parents are worried about their children."
