Russia's state anti-trust agency has initiated a case against LG Electronics' Russian arm on allegations that the South Korean company used special monitoring system on retailers to control prices of smartphones, media reported.

The Federal Anti-monopoly Service (FAS) initiated a case against LG's Russian structure for signs of illegal coordination of economic activity, Sputnik news agency reported on Wednesday.

"FAS initiated a case against LG Electronics RUS for signs of illegal coordination of economic activity. According to FAS, LG Electronics RUS used a special programme for monitoring the prices of retailers to control prices for a number of LG smartphones," an FAS spokesman was quoted as saying.

The South Korean tech giant could face massive fines if the allegations turn out to be true, Yonhap news agency reported.

LG Electronics RUS said other companies also use monitoring systems to track devices' sales prices, and that the claim made by the authority are partly exaggerated.

LG Electronics released its flagship G6 smartphone in Russia in April.
