An Egyptian court Saturday sentenced Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie and 36 others to life in prison, media reported.

The court also upheld the death sentences of 10 other Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters for blocking a highway in Qalubiya city, north of the capital Cairo, in late July 2012, Xinhua reported citing state-run MENA news agency.

Mohamed Badie had been given death sentences in two separate cases for involvement in deadly protests that took place after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

After Morsi's ouster, Egyptian security forces have been carrying out a wide-scale crackdown on his supporters, arresting thousands of them and bringing them to trial
