Six people were killed and 12 others injured on Wednesday after being struck by lightning in Odisha, said an official said.

The lightning struck them at Jaripada village in Khurdha district when they had taken shelter in a roadside house, said district collector Niranjan Sahoo.

He said some youths (aged between 12-21) of the village were playing cricket on the outskirts of the village when it suddenly started raining. They took shelter in the house, where lightning struck and killed four of them on the spot.

Sahoo said the district administration was taking steps to provide assistance under relief code and through other means to the families of the deceased.
