It was the stories of women accused of witchcraft in the interiors of Chhattisgarh that prompted director Shiraj Henry to make film "The Dark Secrets of Tonhi". He said that the film required a lot of research.
The film is based on the horrific incidents of these women, who are stabbed, blinded and even murdered. These women are known as Tonhi in central India.
"I like making movies on realistic subjects and Tonhi, the black magic woman subject interested me. So, I studied the subject going deep in the forest of Chhattisgarh state before making the movie. Several women are killed every year which is a shame," Henry said in a statement.
The movie, which features J. Brandon Hill and Natasha Sikka, will hit screens Feb 21.
