The government's proposal to spend around Rs.70,759 crore for execution of works like railways electrification and establishment of workshops to manufacture bogies and constructing of over-bridges during the current fiscal secured the green signal in Lok Sabha despite a prevailing pandemonium.

The Supplementary Demands for Grants (Railways) 2013-14 were moved for approval by Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge amid din as members staged protests over issues ranging from the creation of Telangana to arrests of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy.

The Railways' demands include a Rs.22,926 crore proposal for electrification of Katwa-Azimganj, Nalhati-Azimganj, and Tildanga-New Farakka by-pass lines, among others, in West Bengal and a Rs.7,500 crore proposal for construction of a workshop to make fiat bogies for LHB design coaches at Yadgir in South Central Railways.

The Railways also moved a proposal to infuse Rs.100 crore equity into the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation.
