An angry mob torched vehicles and pelted stones at police in the state capital following the death of a young man in a road accident, police said.
The incident occurred at Thakurganj when a speeding tractor mowed down a 20-year-old bike rider Pramod Kumar Saini. Irate locals first blocked the road and then set the tractor-trolley on fire.
When fire tenders reached the spot and tried to douse the fire, the mob started pelting stones at them. Policemen who tried to protect the firemen were also stoned.
Police resorted to a cane charge and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
The situation could be brought under control only after five hours after the police and district officials assured the victim's family of adequate compensation.
